State of India at the eve of independence

This chapter tells us about India at the eve of Independence (1947), India was politically weak, economically backward, and socially divided. The country had suffered nearly 200 years of British rule, which drained its wealth and destroyed traditional industries. Agriculture was stagnant, industries were underdeveloped, poverty and unemployment were widespread, and literacy levels were very low. Politically, India lacked self-governance, and socially it faced caste divisions, communal tensions, and inequality, further worsened by the Partition of India.
