Pharmacology is the scientific study of drugs and their effects on living systems. It explores how chemical substances interact with biological organisms to change function, whether for the purpose of curing a disease, easing symptoms, or understanding a physiological process. It is generally divided into two main areas that describe the "conversation" between the drug and the body: 1. Pharmacokinetics (What the body does to the drug) This focuses on the movement of a substance through the body, often summarized by the acronym ADME: Absorption: How the drug enters the bloodstream. Distribution: How it travels to various tissues and organs. Metabolism: How the body (primarily the liver) breaks the drug down. Excretion: How the body eliminates the drug (usually through the kidneys).
